2012 Review

As is my custom, I'm recording my mileage and setting a goal for the new year.

I exceeded my goal for 2012 which was 7,500km by a comfortable margin which makes me quite happy:

  • Count:  172 Activities
  • Distance:  8,101.44 km
  • Avg Distance:  47.10 km
  • Time:  278:53:34 h:m:s
  • Avg Time:  1:37:17 h:m:s
  • Elevation Gain:  24,075 m
  • Avg Speed:  29.0 km/h
  • Avg HR:  146 bpm
  • Avg Bike Cadence:  82 rpm
  • Max Bike Cadence:  240 rpm
  • Calories:  168,975 C

I also exceeded the mileage I did in my car again this year - about 5,800km. Of course this year that was all in an electric car (my LEAF) but it still makes me smile that I have more km's on my bike under my own power than sitting on my rear in a car. I still LOVE my LEAF but no car will compare to a bicycle (for me anyway).

I have found it hard to get much mileage done in December on my trainer but I'm planning on changing that now that the holidays are over. My goal is to be in better shape once I do get outside than last year. It took a while before I could do the longer distance rides that I enjoy. Last year my first ride outside was actually March 11th and with the amount of snow we have this year that will be hard to beat. Ideally I would like to do several trips to Gatineau Park this year before it opens to cars. I never got to do that last year due to my lack of fitness. We'll see how this year goes.

As for a goal for 2013 - that's a tough one. Of course the weather will be a factor (last year was fantastic). I actually think that I really can't plan for too much more unless circumstances change - if I got laid off for example. So that all said I think I'll set it at 8,500km. If I get more trainer km's in than last year and the weather cooperates then it should certainly be achievable.

One other goal for this year is to spend less and save more. I went kind of overboard last year on biking stuff and camera equipment. I have no trips planned for this year but I do for 2014 (my 50th birthday bash) so saving up is mandatory.

Cycling Update

I think my goal for the year of 7,500km is still achievable. If the weather holds out and I don't get sick again (missed a week and a half with a bad cold already) then I should make it.

  • Here's the year so far:
  • Count:   115 Activities
  • Distance:   5,139.34 km
  • Avg Distance:   44.69 km
  • Time:   178:05:55 h:m:s
  • Avg Time:   1:32:55 h:m:s
  • Elevation Gain:   13,781 m
  • Avg Speed:   28.9 km/h
  • Avg HR:   147 bpm
  • Avg Bike Cadence:   83 rpm
  • Max Bike Cadence:   240 rpm
  • Calories:   110,136 C

A look back at 2011 and forward to 2012

A very good year! I posted on Facebook that I did get my LEAF in December. Absolutely love the car! It is so much fun to drive. I'll post more about it soon.

I just wanted to update my cycling totals for the year:

  • Count:149 Activities
  • Distance:6,508.50 km
  • Avg Distance:43.68 km
  • Time:225:44:13 h:m:s
  • Avg Time:1:30:54 h:m:s
  • Elevation Gain:17,531 m
  • Avg Speed:28.8 km/h
  • Avg HR:149 bpm
  • Avg Bike Cadence:86 rpm
  • Max Bike Cadence:238 rpm (obviously screwed up this somehow)
  • Calories:
  • 138,611 C

So exceeded my goal of 6,000 by a little bit. I actually did more mileage on the bike than in my cars (about 5,500 km)! Of course now I have to set a goal for 2012. I'm going to stretch it a little and go for 7,500 km. I think it's certainly doable if I start work earlier every day (7:30) so I can finish at 4:30. This should allow me to do 50 km a day and still be home early enough to get Peanut out for a walk at a reasonable time. I'm so looking forward to riding outdoors now that I'm counting the days to when I can start. We've received less snow this year so maybe I'll be able to start sooner than last year (March 30th).

I also have a new Cervelo frame this year so it's even more incentive:

5000 (More or less)

This is from the beginning of 2011 so some of it was indoors on my trainer or rollers. I think going forward I will set a goal for all of 2012. Unless I can think of a way to easily keep track in Garmin Connect of the type of rides.

  • Count: 116 Activities
  • Distance: 5,169.62 km
  • Avg Distance: 44.57 km
  • Time: 179:14:08 h:m:s
  • Avg Time: 01:32:42 h:m:s
  • Elevation Gain: 14,165 m
  • Avg Speed: 28.8 km/h
  • Avg HR: 147 bpm
  • Avg Bike Cadence: 86 rpm
  • Max Bike Cadence: 238 rpm
  • Calories: 109,672 C

The Gats

Also, here is my last trip up to Gatineau Park. I hope to do this trip more often so I can improve my hill climbing. It's tough but I enjoy it!

3000

So I said that I hoped to complete 6,000 km on the bike this year. Here are my numbers year-to-date:

  • Count:76 Activities
  • Distance:3,049.14 km
  • Avg Distance:40.12 km
  • Time:107:35:17 h:m:s
  • Avg Time:01:24:56 h:m:s
  • Elevation Gain:7,964 m
  • Avg Speed:28.3 km/h
  • Avg HR:149 bpm
  • Avg Bike Cadence:85 rpm
  • Max Bike Cadence:238 rpm
  • Calories:67,063 C

5000

Today i accomplished my goal of riding 5000 km for the season. I'm pretty happy but now I have to set a new one for next year! I think 6000 should be possible if I extend my weekend rides a little. Anyway, here are the details:

  • Count: 127 Activities
  • Distance: 5,001.41 km
  • Avg Distance: 39.38 km
  • Time: 174:55:25 h:m:s
  • Avg Time: 01:22:38 h:m:s
  • Elevation Gain: 16,962 m
  • Avg Speed: 28.6 km/h
  • Avg HR: 144 bpm
  • Avg Bike Cadence: 86 rpm
  • Calories: 136,210 C

30 km/h

Yesterday I broke 30 km/h for my average speed on my usual after work ride. I've done it before but I find it quite hard. It's funny but I can do 29 km/h without too much trouble but to go one faster is hard!

New Route

I did this ride a couple of weeks ago for the first time. On Sunday mornings most of this is on roads that have been closed to cars. The weather didn't cooperate this weekend but I hope to do it again soon.

Good Ride Today

I Had a good ride today. I tried something different. I went south and west to a town called Ashton. It's not a bad ride since the wind pushes you back home for a while. Still felt good when I got home. The town is half way to Perth which I want to get to soon. That would be a metric century. Here are the details from today:
